The Regulatory Science department’s role is to lead the development and execution of regulatory science strategies to advance Altria’s business goals. We are currently seeking a highly qualified Senior Scientist II to join our Analytical Sciences department located in our Center for Research and Technology in Richmond, VA.

In your role as Senior Scientist II, you will provide technical leadership for non-targeted analytical methods for the identification and confirmation of compounds found in aerosol and tobacco samples. We will utilize your specialized scientific knowledge including organic chemistry, analytical chemistry, mass spectral interpretation, and NMR to elucidate compound structures. Part of your responsibilities will be conducting investigational experiments such as forced degradation studies using Rapid Oxy or Microwave reactions to isolate compounds and ascertain their mechanism of formation.

How you will make an impact:

* You will be primarily responsible for identification and quantification of compounds in complex matrices using multiple techniques, including high-resolution mass spectrometry
* Responsible for mass spectral and NMR interpretation for characterization of small molecules
* Serve as a scientific and technical leader in his/her area of expertise, leading multiple tasks with no or minimal supervision
* Collaborate with scientists in other disciplines and external organizations by applying his/her Chemistry knowledge to bring new technical insights
* Use your experience working in regulated environments such as GLP or ISO 17025 quality system to develop and validate analytical methods
* Provide technical guidance and instructions to junior lab personnel to conduct problem-solving investigations and instrument troubleshooting

Specific Skills

What you will need to be successful:

* Advanced Degree (Ph.D. preferred) in Analytical Chemistry, Organic Chemistry or related discipline with a focus in Liquid Chromatography, Gas Chromatography, and Tandem Mass Spectrometry
* Demonstrated experience in compound identification using high-resolution mass spectrometry (Experience with Thermo Fisher Orbitrap preferred)
* Experience in method development and validation to implement new methods that will be used for quantitative analysis to support regulatory compliance and/or product development.
* Proven track record of external engagement with relevant scientific organizations such as the FDA, and ISO
* Five or more years of experience (preferred) with chromatography-mass spectrometry-based techniques for the quantitation of trace levels of compounds in complex matrices such as natural products.
* Experience working in a regulated environment under a quality system such as ISO or GLP.
* Experience with sample preparation and extraction techniques (LL, SPE, etc.) for the isolation and quantitation of target compounds in complex matrices
* Working knowledge of identification techniques (MS, IR, UV, IR, UV, NMR, etc.)
* Proficiency with chromatography and mass spectrometry data analysis software’s such as Agilent MassHunter, ProGenesis, Xcalibur, Compound Discoverer
* Excellent technical writing and communications skills as demonstrated by presentations and publications in the areas of expertise
* Ability to actively engage and travel to industry meetings and conferences.
